This week, the SL Art Community Centre has become a Second Life Showcase! This is great news because it makes it easier for people to find us and because it is an acknowledgement of the SL Art Community Centre.

Letter from Mar Dwi explaining the current situation and future of SLACC.

Dear current and former SLACC-artists and friends,

I write you this letter to inform you about several issues. First of all I’ll explain why the SLACC disappeared last wednesday (and when we’ll be back). Secondly I will give you an update on my search for a new owner for the SLACC.

Midday last wednesday i started receiving IMs from concerned SLACC-artists who informed me that the SLACC was gone! I had no idea what was going on and started an investigation. It turns out that my landlord, Azure islands, is updating it’s rental system. Because of this, it is not sending notifications when the tier is due or overdue. This resulted in the situation that Azure islands assumed that I had received 18 warnings about the tier not being paid wile I was unaware of the situation. Because I did not respond to the messages I didn’t receive, they decided to evict the SLACC. I hereby apologise for this inconvenience.

You’ll probably be wondering how we’ll be dealing with this situation. First of all, I’d like to tell you that even though the rental boxes are not rezzed at this moment, I still have access to the rental data and that I have saved all rental data on my hard-drive on july 14th. You are not losing a second or a L$ of rent. Secondly, I was looking for a new owner for the SL Art Community Centre and I have found one. Her name is Amythe Moonlight and I’ll introduce her in more detail elsewhere in this letter. Amythe and I are turning the unfortunate eviction of the SLACC in Optimal into an improvement of the SLACC. The last months, lag was becoming a problem in Optimal and now that we’ve been evicted and everyone has to re-install his/her exhibitions anyway, we’re moving to a new location with less lag.

The SLACC hasn’t received the attention and publicity it deserves the past months. Also we and you will need a few weeks to set up the museum at the new location. Therefore I have re-rented the land in Optimal to organise a temporary exhibition about the history of the SLACC. We will use this exhibition to inform everyone who has the “old” landmark of the SLACC about the new location. Furthermore we’d like to ask you (current and former SLACC artists) to make an artistic contribution to the exhibition. We’ve got 6000m2 of blank canvas. Let’s turn in into one huge collaborative art project!

So now about Amythe Moonlight. Once I announced that I would give away the SLACC to someone, I’ve received many responses from people who would love to take over the SLACC. I’ve interviewed all of them and already within a few minutes of conversation with Amythe I got the feeling that she might be the one. She already runs a successful museum, she is an artist herself, she has a large network (also in SL scenes where I don’t have many connections such as the music scene), she has a marketing background, has a lot more time for SL than I have and is a very amiable person. However, most of all, she is as enthusiastic and passionate about the SLACC as I am.

Many of you know how difficult it is for me to trust a business partner and you also know how much I care for the SLACC. In Amythe I have found someone to whom I trust the SLACC, my home in SL, my identity in SL. I realise that for some of you, the change of ownership of the SLACC is a big issue which you’ve been sceptical about from the beginning. I hope that, once you’ve met Amythe and have seen how well she does her as owner of the SLACC, you will give her the same trust that I have in her.

So now what? Is Mar gone and are you left with no museum, a temporary exhibition about how cool the SLACC used to be and no money? Of course not! The new SLACC will be located here . There is nothing to see there at this moment. We will need a few days to prepare the land and reconstruct the SLACC building. You can start installing your exhibitions in the second half of next week. I froze the rent on july 14th. It will continue once the SLACC is open for you to install your exhibitions. You will receive 2 weeks of rent for free on top of the rental time you had on july 14th. If you choose not to move with us to the new location, you will receive a refund of the rent you had on july 14th. The temporary exhibition can be found here: feel free to leave your mark, art, signature or anything you like. Please try to keep it low prim to enable everyone to leave something behind.

Regarding to the rental time you’ve had left on july 14th, I realise that I recorded this on a specific moment in time. Therefore I will make sure that none of you are disadvantaged. For example: if on july 14th, you had 11 days, 22 hours, 25 minutes and 44 seconds rental time remaining at the moment I saved the rental times, you had 12 days of rental time two hours before. Therefore I will complete the rental times by adding one day. For example, if your rental time was 11 days, 22 hours, 25 minutes and 44 seconds you will today have 12 days rental time. Another example: if your rental time was 4 days, 1 hour, 12 minutes and 56 seconds, your rental time today will be 5 days.

If you choose to continue your exhibition at the SLACC, you will receive 14 days rent for free. For example, if you have 12 days rent left, you will as of today will have 26 days rent left.

If you choose to leave the SLACC, you will be refunded those days. So if you rent a gallery at 150 L$ per week and have 12 days rent left, you will receive 150/7*12= 257 L$ refunded.

Temporarily unavailable

Due to a flaw in the tier overdue warning system, I was too late with paying the tier. This resulted in eviction.

This is the reason for the empty galleries at the SLACC at this moment. I have reclaimed the land to be able to inform everyone about this situation and to organise an event (more on that next week)

Together with the new owner of the SLACC, Amythe Moonlight, I am taking this opportunity to move the SLACC to a location with less lag. We will announce the new location within a few days.

Hereby I ask SLACC artists to give me one or two days to sort things out and to inform you fully on the situation and how it will be solved. The goal is to have you reinstalling your exhibitions within one week. You will receive 2 weeks free of rent to compensate for the trouble of having to reinstall your exhibition.

A further introduction to Amythe Moonlight also follows tomorrow or the day after. I would like to point out that it is an unfortunate accident that the SLACC is unavailable during the change of ownership.

I apologise to the SLACC-artists and visitors for the inconvenience of this situation and will do my best to inform you about the solution of this tier problem and about the change of ownership.

In December 09, the SL Art Community Centre was visited by 265 unique visitors who made a total of 468 visits with an average length of 10,6 minutes per visit. That's a lot less than in november. The major difference between these months are the events. November had 5 days with between 25 and 50 visitors, december had only one such day.

SL Museum Group Tour

Group museum hop - join the fun - bring your friends! Art lovers are invited to gather at the SLACC on Tuesday, December 15, 12 noon PST, for an one hour tour of Second Life museums. A great way to socialize and learn more the art scene at the same time! This will be the first of a projected series of gallery and museum tours using a special hud customized by Sasun Steinbeck. Hosts for this event include Alizarin Goldflake, Hermit Barber, Mar Swi, Sabrinaa Nightfire, and Sasun Steinbeck. There will be a brief orientation period during which the use of the hud and the gallery rating system will be explained. Then we will embark on our tour. All tour-goers will be urged to rate each museum on its rating kiosk and to write a brief review at their discretion. The goal of these tours is to help people become familiar with SL galleries and museums, to increase traffic for art venues, and encourage the use of the gallery rating system designed and maintained by scripting wizard Sasun Steinbeck.

Yesterday, Seba Sideways gave a jazzy, funky live performance at the SL Art Community Centre. Even though it was early on a monday afternoon for most SL residents, quite a few people showed up and we had a great party!

November visitor stats

Thanks to Sasun Steinbeck's efforts to write and include a visitor counter in the galleries of SL kiosk, I now have access to incredible visitor stats. For free!

In november, the SL Art Community Centre had 318 unique visitors.

The last 20 days of november, a total of 7609 visitor minutes were spend at the SLACC.

Combining these data shows that an average visitor has spend more than 7609/318 = 24 minutes at the SLACC.

These figures include current and former SLACC artists. Removing those leads to the following data:

284 unique visitors, 3859 visitor minutes (the last 20 days). 3859/284 = 13,6 minutes per visitor.

The visitor minutes data are underestimations because the first 9 days of november, the visitor counter didn't register visit duration. During the seminars the visitor counters don't register visit duration accurately either because the scanner doesn't see visitors who don't move.

The Art Gallery Owners of SL Kiosk system was designed to connect art lovers to all the fantastic art galleries in SL. The goal is to make it easy and fun for people to locate and travel to your galleries and bring in more traffic, helping more people see (and buy!) your art.

On Saturday at 1pm I'll be leading a discussion seminar at the Second Life Art Community Center (SLACC) hosted by Mar Dwi to talk about this system with you. I'll give you some insight into how the system works and how you can best take advantage of it to achieve your goals, be that sales or increased visitor traffic. Since this system was designed for YOU, I'd love to get feedback on how I can make this system better for you.

At the session I will be unveiling a beta test version of a new remote voting kiosk that can be used by your gallery visitors to rate your gallery. This is designed to gather more gallery ratings and reviews from your visitors without forcing them to go back to the Art Galleries of SL kiosk to rate your gallery. I am currently beta testing this kiosk and will be giving out test versions at the session if you would like to help test this for me.

The SL Art Community Centre moves to Optimal!

On September 1^st, Dreamland has announced that the region where the SL Art Community Centre is located will be converted. Without further explanation I was given 14 days to move. They offered me a free relocation or upgrade within Dreamland but under current market conditions this is not attractive so I chose to relocate the SL Art Community Centre elsewhere.

Azure Islands turned out to be a great new landlord and the SL Art Community Centre can now be found on their region Optimal: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Optimal/35/143/29 . Azure Island’s tier is so much lower than Dreamland’s that I was able to buy 20% more land and pay only 50L$ per month extra. This results in larger galleries, higher prim limits and no extra costs for the artists who rent a gallery at the SL Art Community Centre. In fact, the new building offers galleries up to 2.5x larger and prim limits up to 2x the prim limit compared to the previous location.

I am very proud of the artists who worked very hard to relocate their exhibitions and I am grateful for all the support I have received. We’ve made the new SL Art Community Centre even nicer than the old one and that feels very good. However, I am also sad to see the old location forced to close. The way Dreamland has treated me (no refund of remaining tier, no refund of the money on my Dreamland account and no financial compensation for the additional costs I have to make and my inability to sell the land. Total financial loss is +- 30,000L$) has disappointed me.

The that the new and improved SL Art Community Centre @ Optimal will open on September 19^th. At this moment I can’t afford a musician to perform so if you know someone who’d like to cheer us up with music and a discount, please let me know!

Visitor statistics

July has been a wonderful month for the SL Art Community Centre. Never before have we welcomed so many visitors and never before have we had such acurate data about our visitors. I'm so happy about the recent growth in visitors that I love to share it with you.

In may and june I noticed that the SLACC had more visitors than usual. Because the numbers grew too big to deal with my old visitor counter I've bought a new one. This is why the data starts at the 2nd of july and not on the 1st.

Since july the 2nd, the SLACC has been visited 592 times.

The highest amount of visitors was at july the 30th, 33 visitors

There seems to be no favourite day for a visit to the SLACC, only sunday and monday are slightly quieter.

Average visit duration isn't very useful because the variance is likely to be huge. Yet it is unspecified.

The best news comes last: About 50% of the visitors visit the SLACC more than once.

I'd like to ask SLACC artists to tell me how they value these data. Information on returning visitors and visitor loyalty costs 4000L$ per month and I can't afford to do this every month. Unique visitor nrs costs 250L$ per month and I will continue to provide these. If you really want to know about returning visitors every month, let me know.

SLACC Artists interview - Mipi Lopez

Hereby a brand new interview with a SLACC artist. This time Mipi Lopez will expose his soul ;)

Could you give a short introduction about yourself? What kind of art do you make, which media do you use, what style describes your art, etc.
Well, I like to express my creativity in many different ways. I illustrate and write a comic strip called "The Missing Adventures of Blight the Clown" that can be viewed on my blog: www.blightproductions.com. I also paint, draw and take photographs. I play in a nationally signed rock band called "Things outside the skin" (www.outside-the-skin.com). And I also created/ produced and edited an EMMY nominated television series about artists called "ART or something like it!" (www.artorsomethinglikeit.com)
How did you become an artist in SL?------Well, I figured it would be an interesting way to learn a 3D software, meet other interesting artists, and promote my own work.

Where/how do you find inspiration for your art?
Everywhere. My mind races nonstop at 9000 miles an hour all the time. I have more ideas than there is time in the day to do them all.

What are your future plans/dreams as a SL artist?
Eventually, I would like to bring the multimedia event that is the live show of my band into the SL world and tour both worlds at the same time.

What did you learn in SL that you would like to share with other artists in SL?
Don't accept any gifts from any one you don't know and trust.

What do you think about the SLACC? What do you like and what could be improved?
I am not sure what there is to be improved, I think it does the job. Maybe there could be more promotion, but there is never enough promotion for anything good.

What is the most inspiring place in SL (no, you don’t have to answer SLACC ;) )
Well i really enjoyed the Burning Life events in SL som really amazing things there. There is also an amazing Lovectraft inspired sim that is home to some of the best builds in SL and they play an amazing array of radio dramas.

Which SL artists do you admire?
I am really not sure, I don't get a chance to really get to know to many other artists in SL. Iam always so damn busy making stuff, I get lost in my own little bubble.

Blight the Clown

SLACC Art Contest

As you probably have noticed, the SLACC hosted an art contest the past 4 weeks. Over 200 people visited the contest exhibition of which over 130 have voted. With a vast majority of votes, Soleil Beam has won the contest with her photograph of drops of water on a flower.

Last tuesday she received her prize of 1500L$.

I am still thinking of a theme for the next art contest. If you have ideas please let me know!

Could you give a short introduction about yourself? What kind of art do you make, which media do you use, what style describes your art, etc.
I'm a real life photographer from england...im working on setting up my first rl gallery at the moment.. about my art...i do two different types of art... first is traditional photographer work...but i like to get famous places from angles maybe others missed or that catch my eye...the other type is digital modern art...using a mixure of photograher and digital graphic art.i like to catch lots of light in all my work...

How did you become an artist in SL?
Well i never planned on doing art in sl... but just thought it would be a great way to get peoples opinions on my work...and its great fun making a gallery to display my work.

Where/how do you find inspiration for your art?
Well with the photography its all about not looking for the shot.. but more the shot catching my eye... like seeing a building as the sun come around the corner...with the digital side... its all about trying different things.. experimenting until u get the desired effect.

What are your future plans/dreams as a SL artist?
Just want my work to make people happy and others enjoy what i do.
What did you learn in SL that you would like to share with other artists in SL?the number one thing ive learned is u will not become rich selling art on sl.... and i feel it should not be about that anyway.. its about sharing each others wonderful talents..and inperations

What do you think about the SLACC? What do you like and what could be improved?
I like it alot.. the idea is great... and the art there is very good.. many different styles in one place.. maybe we could all help make the place get bigger and stronger by helping with events.

For me its the many beautiful gardens... some amazing places to visit and expore.. like avilon..

SLACC Artists interview - Mar Dwi

I am interviewing myself! How uncool is that :D. Anyway, since I have been active at the SLACC for such a long time I figured it would be nice to have an interview with myself at the blog too. Here it is:

Could you give a short introduction about yourself? What kind of art do you make, which media do you use, what style describes your art, etc.
I am the creator of the Second Life Art Community Centre, owner of MD Construction and I am a RL and SL photographer.
I think my SL photography is characterised by an interest in people, emotion, social interaction and all weird things one can find in SL as well as landscapes and environments in SL.
My RL photography is more centered around landscape and nature photography.

How did you become an artist in SL?
I became a gallery owner in SL before I became an artist. Once I had a gallery and I had started taking screen shots in SL I decided to show some of my pics. It turned out to be quite a success so I continued shooting pics in SL. After a while I decided I'd like to have some feedback on my RL photography so I also started showing that in SL.

Where/how do you find inspiration for your art?
For my SL photography I find inspiration in SL. My favourite locations are La Reve and many of the Brazilian sims. Brazilians have a really cool way of exagurating everything with their appearance. This is really inspireing and allows me to take cool pics that show social interaction without words.
My inspiration for my RL photography I find in a similar way as in SL. I just start wandering around my home town. I am lucky to live in a city surrounded by 5 different landscapes so there is always something going on with wildlife or seasonal changes in the landscape.

What are your future plans/dreams as a SL artist?
I like to become a sculpture aswell. However, it turns out to be very difficult :( . Also I would like to create a RL book with SL photography.
What did you learn in SL that you would like to share with other artists in SL?
I learned that SL is a place that gives me almost unlimited posibilities to express myself in a creative way within a social network that gives me feedback on what I do. It's a very cool place with a very nice community of artists.

What do you think about the SLACC? What do you like and what could be improved?
Haha, that's a tricky question since I have build and manage the place. I think it is a really cool place in SL where artists can show their art and learn from eachother. However, I think that most artists at the SLACC could be more actively participating to make it a real community.

Who are you in RL?
I am a student at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. My fields of interest are global food security (production, processing, distribution, quality, availability, access, healthyness and safetyness of/to food), landscape and human interaction with landscape. Appart from my study I am interested in cooking, music (jazz, blues, rock, country, bossa nova and a lot more :) ), photography, SL (what a suprise), playing guitar.

Could you give a short introduction about yourself? What kind of art you make, which media you use, what style describes your art, etc?
My art is RL art, I do watercolour since 1998. I tried all mediums, experienced a lot with kinds of techniques never found what I was looking for, I looked for transparency in my work, only watercolour could give me that, and I fell in love with it.I like to paint very natural, and I guess I just have my own style.I’m very much charmed by the Art Nouveau period and Art Deco as well.Love the works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Anthony Gaudi, and Gustav Klimt.All men who loved and lived for Colour like I do.

How did you become an artist in SL?
I first learned a little bit of building. My partner at that time, helped me to learn the basic skills, after I made my paintings ready for selling, he told me my art would look nice in a gallery, and he contacted his friend Mar Dwi, gallery owner and well known by artists in SL he came over and a few weeks later my first exhibition was a fact.

Where/how do you find inspiration for your art?
Everything inspires me; it also depends on the way I feel at that moment. The flight of a bee or a leaf on the ground, the view in my garden, or my grandkids, all is inspiration to me. I love to paint still lives, flowers, but also a wreck of an old-timer has it fascination, or the look of a dragon in a fantasy painting, Stonehenge you name it…

What are your future plans/dreams as a SL artist?
I just hope to have my own shop one day to sell my art and my design furniture together.If wishes were fishes I sat by the pond all day.

What did you learn in SL that you would like to share with other artists in SL?
Never to give up dreaming, SL is the most wonderful place, a place to show many people from all over the globe your art, where in RL do you get this opportunity?

What do you think about the SLACC? What do you like and what could be improved?
SLACC to me is a wonderful place, I’m proud to have my art there. Ever since the opening in September 2007, my corner has been a nice place to come to, to talk, relax and change the artwork every once in a while, so all stays fresh and new.To me, it is the perfect and the most wonderful and best place to hang my art.

What is the most inspiring place in SL (no, you don’t have to answer SLACC ;) )
The lost gardens of Apollo, I just love to be there, most of the time I am there alone, and I can dream away, the view and the sunset is unforgettable. A great place to reflect and think of things, to let your mind flow.

Which SL artists do you admire?
Leonardo Nuvolari is a US painter and his works are completely different from mine, his works are very abstract, I fell in love with them from the moment I saw them.And then there is Arnold Jung an Estonian photographer has wonderful pictures he made in RL, all of them breathe a special atmosphere that I love very much.Both are dear friends, i love them.

Who are you in RL?
I live in Belgium, in the northern Dutch speaking part, called Flanders.I’m a woman, mature, grown up kids, and I’ve been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil in that left hand of mine I guess. But I became aware the art of drawing and colour in all its aspects of it at my twelfth, when a man from Art school in Antwerp encouraged me to keep on going and do it with dedication, with love. I never have forgotten his words. An art contest in school when I was 15 did put me on track to find my way in the wonderful world of Arts.An education at the Northern Limburg School Of Fine Arts came out of this.Some great teachers helped me refine my skills.I tasted of the old Art of Batik, and learned to design as well.Also some Graphic and Drawing and Ceramics I learned. But, I lost my heart at the noble Art of Watercolour.
I took part in a Provincial contest in my Province Capital and other cities in Belgium and an Art contest Circus & Clowns as well.I had several RL exhibitions.
And look, here I am, lots and lots of year later, still doing my thing and most of all: I love to do it.
No art, no life.

SLACC Artists interview - Elko Schufang

I am proud to present the first SLACC artist interview. In future I will interview more SLACC artists.
Elko Schufang has had a gallery at the SLACC from the day the SLACC opened. Her low prim sculptures are inspireing and prove that SL sculptures don't need 100s of prims.

Could you give a short introduction about yourself?
My artwork is my life. I saw a lot, sad and nice things. In Second Life I have the chance to show what I feel in my mind. I think alot about life and what it could be. Every Artwork tells a story. People and fates inspire me I'm thrilled to bring happiness to people I love selfless and helpful people. Laugh and cry live together in life. I believe in the undying soul and life after death.
Sometimes is blues in my soul, sometimes I feel the power of life.Sometimes I feel like spring, sometimes I feel the sadness in the world.
So I build in SL, the vibrations going from my soul through my handin the Buildingtool from SL.It´s only floating………..…………the results are my sculptures.Listen, sometimes you can hear my sound in this objects.

How did you become an artist in SL?

I learn building in SL.Here in SL can I show my feelings in my soul.Words are not enough.SL is i good Tool.

SLACC art contest

SLACC Art Contest
The Second Life Art Community Centre (SLACC) is having an art contest and all artists in SL are invited to enter. The theme of the first contest is WATER. Water is all around us, it is the source of life and joy as well as a source of conflict, it can have all colours, reflect light but also is transparent, it has been an inspiration for artists for centuries.
The 9 nominees of the SLACC Art Contest will be displayed at the SLACC, the winner will receive a prize of 1500 L$.
RULES for participation

1. This art contest is open for all avatars in Second Life except for the following avatars:
a. Mar Dwi (Owner of the SLACC)
b. All avatars who have been banned from the SLACC

2. To participate, send a modifiable copy of your artwork to Mar Dwi. Don't send a texture, send an object. If you want to have your artwork returned after the contest, send a transferable version, otherwise send a copyable version. Before sending your artwork make sure to:
a. Rename the artwork into: SLACC AC Water – [Your avatar’s name] – [Name of artwork]
b. Make sure your artwork has the right permissions
c. Make sure your artwork has consists of no more than 6 (six) prims3. The avatar sending the artwork must be owned by the Real Life creator of the artwork.
4. An avatar may only enter 1 (one) artwork to the competition.
5. Artworks may be entered to the competition untill march the 13th.
6. There are no costs for entering the competition other than the costs of having access to Second Life.
7. Artists who enter art to the competition agree not receive a financial reward for their art being displayed at the SLACC.
8. The winning artwork will be chosen as follows:
a. From all entered artworks, Mar Dwi will choose 9 (nine) artworks that will be nominated.
b. All nominated artworks will be displayed at the SLACC from March the 15th until March the 30th.
c. When the artworks are displayed, all visitors of the SLACC can vote for their favourite artwork.
d. The artwork which has received most votes will win the competition
e. If more than one artwork receives most votes (these artworks receive the same amount of votes), they both will win the contest. Their creators will share the prize.
f. The avatar who entered the winning artwork will receive a prize of 1500 L$
9. By entering an artwork to this competition, an avatar agrees to the rules of the competition.
